WPN.sg Workshop on 18 Sept 2009

The WPN workshop was successfully concluded that Friday night @ the scenic Hort Park's function room where we shared on the business viewpoint of wedding photography.

A very good exchange of ideas & queries although it was time-tight to try to impart the details of some of the very important aspects within 45 mins. But nevertheless, we raised an awareness for the participants that in business, you have to look more into the details than to skim along the surfaces in order to build and sustain the model till the desired end result.

Anyway enough rumbling from me. Many thanks to the WPN team, namely George, Yu Hsin, KC and the rest of the gang for the concerted effort in making our 1st workshop a general success!

Following are photos courtesy of Gilbert of 9 Frames, love the M8 :D -

Ron is seeing green....

Dear friends and couples who emailed me on your wedding enquires,

currently I'm donning the SAF greens (ie: RESERVIST) and exploring theĀ barrenĀ landscape of Singapore training grounds from 20th April 2009 to 29th April 2009 and flying off to Perth for a PreWedding shoot from the 29th April's evening to the 7th May 2009.

So the replies to your enquires and emails will be a little slower than usual during this period. Do allow me some time to get back to you all on your queries yeah? :)

Hates wearing green,

Ron ^.^

EyeDeas Photography joins WPN.sg

finally... EyeDeas Photography has joined WPN.sg!

I know it was already some time since WPN.sg was set up and I have been holding back on joining coz' of the fact that I need to spruce up my portfolio with EyeDeas ver 2.0 to be at least around a certain level of appreciation for the finer art in Wedding Photography with the rest of the members like Eadwine, WanSheng, CKuang, Kelvin Koh, KC, Joho, Gabriel, Yuhsin, William, George and Gilbert... whom all have already established excellent wedding photography portfolios).

This marks also my foray into online collective advertising so the need to balance investment versus risk and volume comes into mind.

As most of you know, I don't advertise at all and solely, my business model is by references and word-of mouth. The business model has worked very well for me the past 5 years and is still working very well, just that I want to grow this business into something more than just Wedding Photography and what better platform can I ask for than to be linked with WPN.sg where the very best of Wedding Photography standards can be found :)

So spread the word around :D

EYE-DEAS - 4th year and counting..

As promised in my last entry that I would share my thoughts on being in the wedding photography business and how God has been really merciful and gracious to me the past few years.

As some of you guys would have already known how EYE-DEAS came about, I shall not bore you all but will just share a short note on being, as Ruth from Sparkle Thots has candidly put it, 4 years old ^.^

As of any business, there are many ups and downs but I am very thankful firstly to God for being ever so patient and gracious to me. He lifted me up when I was feeling down and out and He gave me so many reasons to count my blessings every single day. He celebrated with me when I have my ups times and blessed me tremendously with love and support from everyone around me.

Again, as in any business, the emotional and physical support from friends, clients and family is so very important. I'm very glad and happy that I have wedding clients who eventually turned into good friends and that even though I don't do any printed adverts, I am still getting referrals and testimonies from the circuit to keep the business going. When on Facebook, I see some of the wedding photos that I took appearing as profile pics and on online albums, it means a lot to me, even a little thing like that.

My close friends have always been a pillar of confidence and that in all things, I can always rely on them for advice and help when needed. Their vote of confidence in me has been unwaivering and I'm very grateful for their faith. I would also like to give thanks to my wife, Ms Clover, for she plays the biggest part in keeping me sane when the world is in turmoil, for the comforting shoulder to lean on when I'm emotionally & artistically tired and for being there just for me when things around me are beyond my humanly comprehension. Indeed God has been wonderful that I have led me to marry my life's soulmate.

Here, I want to give thanks also to my fellow peers who have always been there for me and for their unrivaled commitment and artistic professionalism in the field of Wedding Photography: Eadwine of Plushphotography, Wansheng of feldberyl images and Kuang of 39EastImages. Without them, I'm nowhere and no one. You guys have inspired me alot! To Ngiap Heng of The Pond Photography for your amazing love for photography has constantly provided an insatiable drive to be creative and seeking out the road less traveled :)

Through photography, I have broaden my circle and made new friends. It's amazing how the small the world is when you see that you are just separated by 6 degrees. Indeed, Praise be to God!

This year has really been phenomenal and I pray that it will be so for the many years to come!

Turn of the key...

Time for a change.

There's so many things that will be happening in the next 2-3 months as I'm re-organising my online portfolio for the new website.

dR mentioned to me that my current website doesn't really show an update of my portfolio so it's really time to update it and seeing all my peers' revamped websites, it is heartening to know that everyone's heading up for improvements and new heights in photography.

Let's get cracking.

Coming to the end of my hiatus...

my 2 months hiatus is coming to an end soon (next week Sat).

The past 2 months have been good... I took a break from wedding photography and rested myself in Taipei. Gotten some inner inspirations from fellow peers and mentors, feeling motivated to propel myself up to the next level.

Seeing the growth in my fellow peers, they have inspired me to look harder and push myself to the limit of my own creativity. I will be adopting new approaches to the business of wedding photography as well as modifying a bit of my style to suit the current trends.

I'm hyped to start work on 1st April also., God is good.. there has been just email enquires during the 2 months but the actual assignments only came in after 1st April.. He is indeed God of Providence. I'm also excited to be going to HKG soon to shoot one of my clients where it will be a 1st and real test of my skills after taking a 2 months break to recollect myself.

There's my website to revamp as well as new contractual amendments to be made. New directions as well as new approaches.

I'm ready to go back to work :)

EYEDEAS is 3!!

I know I shouldn't be blogging but I have to squeeze this post in coz it's another milestone for EyeDeas Photography :)

EYE-DEAS is 3 years old as of 1st Dec 2006!

Yupz, 3 years has passed so fast and it's yet another year of thanksgiving, praises and celebration. I am really thankful for all the opportunities that God has blessed unto my life, for sustaining this business as well as providing me with supportive peers and appreciative clients.

Looking back when I first started out, It was again a rash decision to just step away from the norm of working in an office and sustaining myself with a less-travelled road of being a photographer. In fact I still remember my mum telling me how much can I earn as a photographer when I first started out... with no CPF and variable expenses and no fixed monthly income.. it looked bleak in the beginning and it was bleak coz as a newcomer, how am I going to break into the industry?

Well, like all things, everything has a beginning and I began this risky path into the business of providing photography to corporates and the occasional weddings of close friends. All I'm armed with is a passion to create something out of my life, a headstrong notion to prove that I can do this and sad to say, no relevant working experience in photography. Hack, I dun even know what is the rules of third or effective composition when I started... all I wanted to do is to be doing something different with my life.

It was a very very tough journey, worrying every day over where is my next meal going to come from, how to cope with bills and how to better my skills to be competive. I remembered asking for advise from my idol photographer, Ming, whom I got to know since OCS when he was my aux. instructor on the matter of photography and he texted me this very simple but memorable phrase - "Photography is a skill developed over time." There was a lot of wisdom in that simple phrase and by observing his works, I have been inspired many a times to want to create a signatory style. Of coz, it will take time :)

I still remembered my 1st commisioned wedding shoot for a close army friend who believed in me even though I know I didn't do a good job for his wedding but yet he was very encouraging and told me that he believed that I will make it one day. Til this day, I am still thankful for his encouragement coz in this business, it's either make or break and I need the morale support to know that I can do it.

God only knew how many times I want to give it all up and go back to be a office worker... but He kept blessing me with opportunities to practice my craft and brought along friends that helped me establish my foothold in my chosen career. From the yesteryears of a very cheap photographer of SGD$ 500 to today, I am still thankful for all the help and recommendations that I get, for all the useful advice and compliments of my work which I know wouldn't be possible without God and His providence.

With peers like Eadwine of Plush, Wansheng of Feldberyl and later, the introduction to Ngiap Heng of The Pond and Kuang of 39 East, I grew in my craft and confidence that this can work out. I got exposed to the concept of managing my photography as a business by Kuang and got to see how I should streamlined my operations and providing the best to my clients within my means and expertise. Ngiap Heng, as a ranking old-timer in the wedding industry, gave me a lot of helpful insights into improving my work as well as letting the quality of photography prove my worth. He even got me shooting RAW which I used to despise. As for Eadwine, hahaha... well, we shared our problems and advise each other (still) coz we started out almost at the same time and many of the problems he faced was what I was facing.. Wansheng was later introduced to me by Heng and has became b*tching partners and good fellow peer since :D

Special mentions again to Lil'Snooze for suggesting the name 'Eye-Deas' that glued the separate pieces together as well as Teh Peng & Naniecheng for helping me with the website when it was set-up :)

The one person I want to thank also is Ms Clover... I think it has been a very hard journey for her as well since I started. I think without her, I would have long time ago given up on this road less travelled. Without her physical and mental support, I wouldn't have gotten to where I am today and I really give thanks to God for bringing us together 5 years ago. The whole journey is a time of testing and molding for the both of us as we go through life's obstacles, shaping us for lifetime of commitment and love for each other. Think no words can express my gratitude for her sacrifices that she has made for me...

So what's next?

I think it will be a motto to say that I will be more passionate into doing what I love doing best. Photography has brought so much perspectives (pun intended) into my understanding of what my life is all about on this Earth and to get a glimpse of how God, in His time, has provided me with this skill to capture the beautiful moments in a matrimony through the camera.

The road is still long and I'm just in my baby steps onto it but with friends and peers alike, I would like to continue to grow in the industry and perhaps in time, hope to inspire others into trusting God with their everything, in whatever they do...

Hmm.. as there's really so many people to thank, I think I will just keep it simple and say a big THANK YOU to you all for everything :)

Happy Birthday Eye-Deas!

yours sincerely,

Ron ^.^

ps: And I have yet still to convince my mum on whether photography does earn me a decent income but I think she has nagged me lesser now :)
