Shooting in B&W...

Funny but I was asked this question last night by Ms Clover's dad: "how come I shot my vacation to Krabi in B&W? What about the colors? Colors more realism."

I smiled... I seriously dunno how to tell them this but I really like tones compared to colors. I like that irreplaceable classic feel of viewing a b&w shot that tells of emotions, mood and subtleties. It's not that I despise color but I see better in tones. I guess you can't make every one like your stuff but ultimately I want to please myself with the images I shoot.

So what is a sunset/rise without colors? To me, it means a realism of being. A witness to the beautiful landscape, a humbled person to God's wonderful gift to this earth. Who says monotones can't convey the same majestic feeling of viewing a beautiful sunset? :)

(click on image for larger version) - pardon the rough edit coz I'm using iPhoto from Ms Clover's macbook

I remembered sharing with another photographer once who asked me what should he shoot with if he is going to a place for vacationing... I told him simply this: "shoot the medium you are most comfortable with." Then he asked: " Won't it be a waste not to have both?" To which I answered: "Won't it be a waste then, if you fumbled with 2 different mediums?"

Of coz the age of digital can do greyscale conversion on color medium and then you still can have the best of both worlds but when you are on the ground, standing there... in your mind, you already have that mental picture on what is the eventual output of that scene.

I must say that the new firmware for the Ricoh GrD with its independant control on the level of contrast within the B&W mode has helped tremendously coz it reflected deeper tones during the 'live preview' on the LCD screen.

For me, it's just B&W.

Will try to post more when I have the time or when my powerbook is back from the svc ctr :)

Wow, if this is rough edit, I wonder if the not-as-rough edit can be more beautiful!

I tend to like monotones too, I love the timeless feel about them.
