Wiki's rundown on Sunshine

I managed to watch the movie 'Sunshine' directed by Danny Boyle (Train Spotting, 28 Days later) and somewhat was a little disappointed by the character storyline which is seriously 'B' grade.

No character developments, just pure visuals riding on the back bone of sci-fi genre. Although the movie just kinda leave you hanging, the real motive is the frightening truth that one day, our sun will die eventually and along with it, the irreversible collapse of the solar system as we know it.

The story doesn't start out with stereotypical scenes of Earth being affected and then humankind decided to send a team on a journey to the Sun to 'jumpstart' the big bang theory of creating a new sun (the film Armageddon started like that with falling meteors and the whole shebang) . Instead, it started off with a simple narration of a personal thought as we see a reflection of a sun and a space rocket cruising towards it. With cast like Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evan (Fantastic Four), Hiroyuki Sanada (The last Samurai) and Cillian Murphy (you may remember him as the evil Doctor aka Scarecrow from Batman Begins), I would have thought the character development will be amazingly strong but was let-down by the lack of it.

Perhaps the most poignant scene which I would say has the best value in terms of cinematography was the very last one where we see a frozen Sydney and a woman with her 2 kids in the snow covered park, watching the last transmission from the unlikely protagonist played by Cillian Murphy. That transmission narrated by the haunting voice of Murphy kinda managed to make a psychological flashback in the minds of viewers to how it all began and then as the trio looked up in the sun which was faint in the sky, it burst into strong intensity... a kind of cruel reminder of the fate of the crew but saving the cosmic system with their ultimate sacrifice.

I won't say that it's a bad film but I thought it can really be better especially when Train Spotting was such a good directorial piece from Danny Boyle.

Watch it if you like CG effects, Sci-fi and global environmental issues. The rendering of the sun's rays and heat intensity is as real as it gets and it's beautiful
